Medical Laboratory Science, BS: Prerequisites

SUNY Upstate is an upper-division transfer college specializing in health care careers. Students applying to our bachelor’s programs take the prerequisite courses (minimum 60 semester hours) at another college. Then, they complete their junior and senior years of the bachelor’s degree at Upstate for their program of study.

Pre-admissions Requirements

Before applying, applicants are encouraged to review the prerequisite courses for their intended program of study. Pre-admission requirements for the Medical Laboratory Science, BS program includes:

  • Minimum grade for transfer is a "C."
  • Applicants who plan to apply to medical school should complete one year of physics.
  • Requires a minimum of 60 semester hours

Prerequisite Courses

Applicants may apply without having all the prerequisites completed, but all the prerequisites must be completed by the time the program begins. 

Prerequisite courses for the Medical Laboratory Science, BS program includes:

Prerequisites - Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science

Requires a minimum of 60 semester hours including:

Anatomy & Physiology I* with lab 4
General Biology II with lab -OR- Anatomy & Physiology II with lab 4
Microbiology with lab 4
General Chemistry I with lab 4
General Chemistry II with lab 4
Organic Chemistry with lab** 3-4
College Algebra or Pre-Calculus or Calculus 3
Statistics 3
English Composition 3
English Elective 3
Psychology 3
Social Science elective 3

Liberal Arts or Professional Electives
(Only 4 Credits can be Professional Electives)

14-15
Total 60

* Or Physiology with Anatomy content.
** All science requirements must be courses for science majors and include laboratories. The only exception is Organic Chemistry where the laboratory is recommended, but not required.

Medical Laboratory Science requires 16 semester hours of biology and 12 semester hours of chemistry.  If your biology or chemistry prerequisites are less than 4 semester hours per course, you will need to take additional credits within that discipline to make up the credit.
