How much does the program cost?

Program costs for the Med Prep program are linked below. Tuition and fees are subject to change without notice.

Are there scholarships available?

SUNY Upstate Medical University is pleased to offer a number of internal scholarships and grants to enrolled students. We also have a short list of of outside scholarship opportunities. See our scholarships page for more information.

What is the interview process?

Interviews are done virtually with each applicant meeting with two faculty members for about 20 minutes.

Do I have to submit an AMCAS application?

Applicants do not need to submit an AMCAS application to be considered for Med Prep. However, applicants who will be applying for medical school while enrolled in Med Prep should begin working on elements of their AMCAS app in anticipation of completing it near the first submission date.

Stated another way: Med Prep applications are traditionally due at the beginning of May. Around the same time, students can begin filling out the AMCAS application. Since it is beneficial to complete the AMCAS early, Med Prep applicants who intend to apply to medical school and enter in the next academic year should be working on their AMCAS app intending to submit soon after learning of their acceptance into Med Prep.

For students accepted to the MedPrep program, how are they considered for the College of Medicine?

Med Prep students who meet the following criteria will receive an interview for SUNY Upstate's Norton College of Medicine (NCOM):
  • MCAT Scores of 500 or above by the last exam date (Sept 24th for 2024)
  • Med Prep Fall Semester GPA of 3.5+
NCOM interviews for qualified Med Prep students will be conducted in early spring. Following interviews, Med Prep student applications will be reviewed by the NCOM Admissions Committee and decisions will be communicated.

Importantly, acceptances to NCOM are contingent on the overall Med Prep GPA (both fall and spring) being 3.5 or greater.

Are there clinical opportunities in the program?

In the formalized sense, there are not clinical opportunities in the program. However, as an academic medical center, we have many opportunities to get involved. Competitive applicants to MedPrep will have significant clinical experience already and we hope to focus on their academic enhancement primarily.
