Explore Your Future in Healthcare welcomed a new cohort of twenty-six high school students

Explore Your Future in Healthcare is a Saturday program which exposes high school students (grades 11 and 12) to a wide range of potential health careers through interactive programming. It includes 2 sets of 4 sessions, one in the fall, which is currently underway, and one in the spring. For each set, the program recruits 25 students from city of Syracuse high schools. Students receive a stipend upon completion of the program.

Samples sessions held Saturdays on the Upstate campus, may include:

CONQUERING CANCER: Students meet radiation therapists, tour the chemotherapy suite, learn about treatment options and visit Upstate’s Healing Garden.

FACILITATING FUNCTION: Students experience motion analysis at Upstate’s advanced Institute for Human Performance. Learn about concussions and how they are managed and hear about scientific means of facilitating positive behavior change.

INFORMATION INTENSITY: Students learn how complex computer systems help solve real-world problems faced in hospitals and clinics from experts who work in the field every day.

SIMULATION SATURDAY: Students participate in hands-on activities and demonstrations, which bring medical practice to life in imaging, ICU and operating room environments at Upstate’s state-of-the-art Simulation Center.

IT’S AN EMERGENCY!: Simulated experiences in emergency medical care to stabilize patients experiencing trauma or major medical issues.

The fall session currently underway will conclude November 16th. A second session is scheduled to begin February 1st. Applications are due January 17th. Students are selected by lottery.
