The hiring plan includes strengthening the Upstate Cancer Center research focus areas by recruiting talented investigators with established funding. Qualified outstanding early-career candidates will also be given full consideration. Applications will be accepted for Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor tenure-track positions; rank and tenure status will be commensurate with qualifications. Successful applicants at the Associate or Full Professor levels must have a demonstrated record of achievements in cancer research, as well as established funding. Qualifications include MD, PhD, or MD/PhD; special consideration will be given to physician scientists. All topics of cancer research will be considered, with preference on the current research areas of the Upstate Cancer Center. New hires will have a joint appointment in basic research and clinical departments and an affiliation with the Upstate Cancer Center.

• Tumor Microenvironment and Invasion Program welcomes applicants working on mechanisms of cancer invasion and tumor-stromal interactions with a focus on breast, brain, pancreatic and prostate cancer. Interest areas include: cell adhesion and migration, stromal matrix, cancer-associated fibroblasts and macrophages, tumor vascularization, tumor immuno-biology, mechanobiology, protein trafficking, metaloproteinases in cancer invasion, and cell cycle regulation.

• Developmental Cancer Therapeutics and Drug Screening Program will accept applications from qualified candidates with expertise in small molecule screening and drug design and experience in bringing drug candidates to late-stage animal testing and/or early-stage clinical trials. The applicant should have operational knowledge regarding properties of pharmacophore classes (which tend to have favorable pharmacokinetics and which should be avoided due to toxicity, metabolism, etc.), how to optimize small molecules identified from libraries, how to make small molecules patentable, and how to efficiently screen compounds for efficacy, toxicity, and pharmacokinetics in different animal models.

• The goal of the Program in Urological Cancers is to understand molecular mechanisms of urological malignancies with the ultimate goal of improved treatment and diagnosis and is highly integrated with the Department of Urology clinical activities. Applicants with a focus on prostate, kidney, or bladder cancer are welcome. Special consideration will be given to candidates with expertise in genetics, androgen signaling, cancer bioinformatics, and drug screening.

• Program in Hematological Malignancies integrates basic, translational and clinical research activities in both adult and pediatric blood cancers. This program seeks applicants with research in the area of leukemia, lymphoma or multiple myeloma. The successful hire will join a vibrant program focused on defining the molecular pathogenesis and treatment of these blood cancers. Basic and clinical scientists with strong research expertise/funding in leukemia/lymphoma are encouraged to apply.

• Translational research investigator with expertise in Radiation Biology. Scientists working on any type of cancer with a focus on improving radiation therapy, cellular and molecular effects of radiation therapy on bone tissue; and translational research in radiation biology should apply. It is envisioned that this candidate will collaborate with cancer researchers in associated clinical and basic science departments.

• Translational research investigator with expertise in Cancer Bioinformatics. The successful applicant must have outstanding achievement in one or more areas related to cancer genomics or epigenomics, precision oncology, biomedical informatics with focus on cancer, and clinical or translational oncology. Topics of interest include tumor heterogeneity, genetic and epigenetic biomarkers for cancer diagnosis and prognosis, identification of tumor drivers, bioinformatics applied to cancer immunology and immunotherapy, and population-based GWAS projects in cancer research. Preference will be given to applicants with interest and experience in brain tumor bioinformatics to interface with the Upstate Brain Tumor Research Group and to take advantage of the brain tumor biorepository.
