Intraoperative Lung Brachytherapy

The intraoperative lung brachytherapy procedure is a combined modality approach in the treatment of certain lung cancer patients. At the time of surgical resection, adjuvant radiation therapy is administered by the radiation oncologist. A mesh consisting of tiny, radioactive I125 seeds are permanently attached to the surgical site providing immediate treatment to improve local control. Recovery is similar to that of a routine surgical resection.

The intraoperative lung brachytherapy option is available at Upstate through the expertise of a multi-disciplinary team consisting of thoracic surgeons, radiation oncologists and physicists.
