Neuroanesthesia
Neuroanesthesiology at Upstate Medical University has had a long tradition of excellence in patient care. The neuroanesthesiology section of the Department of Anesthesiology at Upstate Medical University provides around the clock anesthesia care to adult and pediatric patients undergoing simple and complex neurosurgical procedures.
The Division chief, Reza Gorji, MD has 25 years of full-time Neuroanesthesia experience. Along with other doctors within the Neuoanesthesia program, our team has decades of experience providing care to neurosurgical patients. Other faculty members in the department also provide care to patients with neurologic disease.
The full gamut of neurosurgical cases is supported by the Department of Anesthesiology. Among the type of care provided by the department’s neuroanesthesiologists are:
- awake craniotomies,
- anesthesia for epilepsy surgery,
- tumor surgery,
- deep brain stimulators,
- diagnostic and therapeutic cerebral angiography,
- EC-IC bypass,
- diagnosis and treatment of cerebral aneurysms,
- arteriovenous malformations as well as pituitary tumor excision and treatment.
Skull base surgery and cranial nerve surgery such as craniotomy for trigeminal decompression and other procedures are also provided.
Commitment to Care
The department of anesthesiology has a full-time commitment to the Upstate Medical University’s Comprehensive Stroke Center. The Upstate Stroke Center is certified by DNV Health Care, Inc.; it has the highly trained staff in place to provide excellence in patient care for all stroke patients.
Patients with complex spine pathologies who require surgical intervention are also cared for by the department’s faculty as well as the 3 neuroanesthesiologists. Most spine procedures take advantage of state-of-the-art neuromonitoring on a routine basis.
The medical center is a level one trauma center and provides care to most of the region’s cases of head and spine trauma. Cooperation between the neuroanesthesiologist, neurocritical care and as well as neurointerventionalist personnel is present on an ongoing basis.
Additional Patient Care
The Department provides anesthesia services in their state-of-the art operating rooms plus at the recently opened Upstate Cancer Center at Upstate University. The Cancer Center is equipped with 2 operating suites that allow the use of intra-operative MRI during the procedure. A fully equipped and dedicated intra-operative angiography suite is also frequently utilized for treatments of a variety of pathologies including cerebral aneurysms and carotid stenosis.
The department participates in the medical center’s stroke center initiative and fully supports its mission. The university is a comprehensive stroke center.
