What Is Simulation?

Simulation is a technique, not a technology. Healthcare simulation can replace or amplify real experiences with guided experiences that evoke or replicate substantial aspects of the real world in a fully interactive manner (Gaba Future Vision Qual Saf Health Care 2004).

Replicating the essential aspects of a clinical situation allows a participant to more readily understand and apply these skills when in a clinical setting. The use of a blend of low fidelity and high-fidelity simulations approximates what the participants may encounter in the clinical setting.

Key concepts in this learning environment include the following:

  • Patient safety
  • Communication
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Teamwork
  • Cultural competence
  • Informatics
  • Evidence-based practice

Components of these concepts are intertwined throughout the curriculum.
