The Office of Interprofessional Education (IPE) at Upstate Medical University promotes the development of teamwork, collaboration, and communication skills for learners within each of our four colleges.  We support Upstate Medical University’s goal of furthering the Interprofessional Education Collaborative’s (IPEC) four core competencies of IPE for all of our learners:  

  1. Work with individuals of other professions to maintain a climate of mutual respect and shared values. (Values/Ethics for Interprofessional Practice)
  2. Use the knowledge of one’s own role and those of other professions to appropriately assess and address the health care needs of patients and to promote and advance the health of populations. (Roles/Responsibilities) 
  3. Communicate with patients, families, communities, and professionals in health and other fields in a responsive and responsible manner that supports a team approach to the promotion and maintenance of health and the prevention and treatment of disease. (Interprofessional Communication) 
  4. Apply relationship-building values and the principles of team dynamics to perform effectively in different team roles to plan, deliver, and evaluate patient/population-centered care and population health programs and policies that are safe, timely, efficient, effective, and equitable. (Teams and Teamwork)

Why IPE?

Interprofessional Education (IPE) occurs

“when students from two or more professions engage in learning with, from, and about each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes.”

IPE is a foundation for future collaborative practice and team-based care. There are clear links between IPE and improved patient and healthcare quality outcomes. Highly effective teams and team members demonstrate excellence in both the technical aspects (knowing how to complete their responsibilities) and the non-technical (communication, conflict management, and teamwork) aspects of care.

Mission

Our mission is to support teamwork, collaboration, and communication skills in Upstate’s educational programs. IPE in turn supports the interprofessional collaborative practice and the Triple Aim of healthcare:

  • Better patient outcomes
  • Increased patient satisfaction
  • Reduced costs
  • Reducing care provider burnout
  • Health equity

Vision

Our vision is that all Upstate students, faculty, and staff will be widely recognized for their readiness and success in interprofessional collaborative practice. 

The Upstate Medical University Office of Interprofessional Education works to co-create interprofessional learning opportunities with significant input from faculty, staff, and students.  

We continuously review and assess our programming to improve our offerings and work to create scholarship that advance the field of Interprofessional Education.

The Journal of Research in Interprofessional Practice and Education is an open-access journal that disseminates theoretical perspectives, methodologies, and evidence-based knowledge to inform interprofessional practice, education, and research to improve health care delivery, quality of care, and health status for individuals, families, and communities.

Journal of Interprofessional Care 

Journal of Interprofessional Care disseminates research and new developments in the field of interprofessional education and practice. Articles have an explicit interprofessional focus and involvie a range of settings, professions, and fields. Areas of practice covered include primary, community and hospital care, health education and public health, and beyond health and social care into fields such as criminal justice and primary/elementary education.

Meet the Upstate Interprofessional Education Leadership Team

The Upstate IPE Leadership Team exists to serve the interests of all healthcare professionals and provides support such as:  

  • Pilots and implements innovative programs and experiences to meet evolving learner and accreditation needs
  • Consults with faculty and staff to provide quality IPE experiences
  • Collects data from IPE learning events to continually measure and improve learning outcomes for faculty, staff, and students
  • Collaborates with area colleges and university programs on IPE initiatives to enhance learning opportunities
