Psychiatry Grand Rounds
TITLE: “Do We Live in a Multiverse? Exploring an Exciting New Hypothesis”
SPEAKER: Eugene A Kaplan, M.D., Professor and Chair Emeritus, Department of Psychiatry, SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse NY
DESCRIPTION: Dr. Kaplan will present a relatively new theory or hypothesis- the notion that we will all live in a multiverse- that there are many universes, not just one-and that we need to expand our understanding of when we fit in the cosmos, which may be much larger and vaster than just our universe. He will briefly review the history of man’s view of the universe, starting with the primitive view, then the work of Copernicus, Galileo, and Newton; then the work of Einstein, Hubble and Lemaitre and finally the latest contempory views, including the work of Brian Greene and Alan Guth. Finally he will speak about the limits of inquiry and the future; including other planets-or universes- which may be hospitable to some form of life.
