SPEAKER: Stephen Faraone, PhD, is a Distinguished Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Neuroscience & Physiology at SUNY Upstate Medical University and Director of Medical Genetics Research for the University.
DISCUSSANT: Stephen Glatt, PhD

TITLE: “Research Domain Criteria: What They Are and Why They Matter”

DESCRIPTION: The present-day gold-standard diagnostic system for mental disorders (the DSM) serves an important role in the practice of clinical psychiatry, allowing for reliable recognition, characterization, and diagnosis of these disorders. As a framework for research, however, the DSM has considerable shortcomings, most prominently an absence of truly objective criteria or biomarkers. The U.S National Institute of Mental Health has convened expert working groups to define a matrix of putatively more valid domains of functioning that may better serve research efforts and change the way psychiatric disorders are understood and diagnosed in the future. In our presentation, we will discuss the rationale for this effort and provide updates on the current state of progress in establishing RDoC matrices that define psychiatrically relevant phenotypes at various levels, from behavior to cognition to brain circuitry to genes.
