Toxoplasma Gondii and Schizophrenia: Examining the Link Using Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells.

Schizophrenia is increasingly understood to have its etiology in aberrant neurodevelopment; toxoplasma gondii (T.gondii) is a neurotropic intracellular parasite that has consistently been associated as a risk factor for schizophrenia development. If T. gondi is an environmental insult that triggers schizophrenia onset in a subset of those with prenatal exposure, we may be able to understand the molecular and cellular basis of the disease onset by using neuronal models derived from human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) technology.
