  SIDS and Pediatric Sleep  
(CME Course)

Target Audience: This annual conference was developed for neonatologists, pediatric pulmonologists, pediatric neurologists, nurses, respiratory therapists and other healthcare professionals who have an interest in sudden infant death and sleep disorders.

Learning objectives:
1. List at least 1 research project with AASPP participation and explain the purpose and methodology.
2. Explain at least 1 advantage and 1 disadvantage of using a polysomnogram to diagnose pediatric obstructive sleep apnea.
3. Discuss 2 important lessons learned in the last few years about safe sleep in the NICU & the newborn nursery.
4. Discuss the major finding of the decaf pilot study regarding the effects of extending use of caffeine in preterm infants.
5. Summarize the trends in SUID/SIDS rates in the US in the last 10 years.
6. Explain what the CDC SUID Case Registry is and what its purpose is.
7. Discuss 2 findings of the SUID Tissue Consortium pilot study.
8. Explain the confusion in the current use of SUID & SIDS.
9. List 2 major SIDS issues facing nurses and RTs today.
10. Discuss what is known about epigenetics and obstructive sleep apnea
11. List 2 major risk factors for apparent life threatening events and explain how they affect management protocol.
12. Give 2 things learned in the literature review that will impact your patient care.
13. Describe the role of inflammation in obstructive sleep apnea in children.
14. Explain the relationship between cardiorespiratory control and obstructive sleep apnea in infants.
15. Explain an important thing learned from the case presentations and tell how it will affect the way you perform your job.

Approved for 15 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.
