Patient Education Council

The purpose of the Patient Education Council is to drive and safeguard the determination of patient education standards.

The goal of patient and family education services at Upstate Medical University is to improve patient health outcomes by promoting recovery, facilitating return to optimal function, promoting health behaviors and by appropriately involving the patient in his or her health care decisions.

The objectives of patient and family health education services are to:

  • Inform patients and families about how to negotiate through the health care system
  • Prepare patients and families for surgical, medical and diagnostic procedures
  • Assist patient and families in the management of their diseases
  • Provide health promotion and wellness information
  • Assist patients and families to make informed decisions about their health
  • Help patients and families manage illness
  • Assist patient and families in planning for health care needs across the continuum to include hospital, ambulatory and home care services.
