The dynamic residency curriculum provides experience in a variety of clinical settings under the guidance of 11 clinical pharmacy faculty members, some of whom were former residents of our program.

The faculty also has appointments in the Department of Medicine, Emergency Medicine and other affiliated colleges of pharmacy. The patient population at University Hospital includes adults, pediatrics and medically compromised patients. Residents experience additional patient interaction during their toxicology rotation, which brings them to other area hospitals.

The training experience is built on 12 one-month rotations.

Orientation is followed by nine required rotations:

  • Oncology
  • Pediatrics
  • Internal Medicine
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Pharmacy Practice
  • Ambulatory Care
  • Clinical Toxicology
  • Critical Care
  • Clinical Pharmacology
Residents have a choice of two elective rotations which include:

  • Ambulatory Care II
  • Cardiology
  • Critical Care Medicine
  • Infectious Diseases II
  • Oncology II
  • Pediatrics II
  • Toxicology II
  • Surgical Intensive Care
  • Internal Medicine II

The Research and Pharmacy Administration rotations are longitudinal experiences. During the clinical pharmacology rotation, residents are responsible for all geriatric and clinical pharmacology consult services, in addition to supervising all clinical pharmacokinetic activities. The residents present one consult case at clinical pharmacology rounds which is attended by faculty, pharmacy residents, pharmacy students, medical students, medical residents and pharmacists.

Teaching and Other Responsibilities...

Residents also teach nurse practitioners at the College of Nursing. Presentations at clinical pharmacology rounds are also informal teaching experiences.

Residents' weekend responsibilities are clinical and include pharmacokinetics, and clinical pharmacology consult services. Complementing the clinical experience, the residents have two to three journal club presentations, newsletter, drug utilization evaluations, formulary drug monograph and a research project. Research intensity is driven by residents' desire. Each resident will have a customized plan based on areas of interest.
