Maps

Mapping your data can have a significant impact in helping your "audience" understand your message, whether it's a grant application, a business plan or simply a market research project. On this page you will find a couple of mapping examples that are also available for printing via Adobe Acrobat Reader. The first example shows counties in Central New York that are most served by University Hospital as a whole. It's important to point out that individual specialties may have a service area that is either smaller or larger than what is depicted here.

University Hospital's Service Area

The 13 counties listed in the map below make up University Hospital's primary, secondary and tertiary service areas, which represent 95 percent of the total number of discharges. Service areas are defined as:
  • PRIMARY SERVICE AREA is defined as the county from which a hospital draws at least 50 percent of its total patient population.
  • SECONDARY SERVICE AREA includes those counties from which the hospital draws at least 2 percent but less than 50 percent of its patient population.
  • TERTIARY SERVICE AREA includes those counties from which the hospital draws between one and two percent of its patient population.

Additional Maps

Please remember that these maps are just a few examples to show the different possibilities that are available through the department of Market Research and Business Planning. If you would like to request a map for your project or if you have any other questions regarding mapping or market research, please feel free to contact a department representative.
