The Child Abuse Project
The Child Abuse Project provides trainees with a comprehensive and well-supervised experience in consultative, evaluative and treatment services to children who have been sexually abused.
Trainees, working along with Dr. Wendy Gordon, provide consultation to the CARE (Child Abuse Referral and Evaluation) Clinic, a pediatric specialty clinic at the Upstate Medical University's University Hospital where abused children are referred for medical evaluation. Trainees work closely with the Clinic's specially trained team consisting of physician, nurse, nurse practitioner, and social worker.
The trainees have the opportunity to:
- observe and conduct interviews with children and parents or caretakers, and then consult with the CARE Clinic's team.
- selected cases from the CARE Clinic are seen by the trainees at the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Clinic for an in-depth psychodiagnostic evaluation over the course of the training year
- trainees have the opportunity to continue with some of these children in ongoing psychotherapy
