Total Joint Program
Preoperative Session
Individuals undergoing a total joint replacement at University Hospital are able to participate in a preoperative session. The preoperative appointment is a one stop session designed to meet the needs of the individual, this includes as needed a medical, lab and anesthesiology assessment, discharge planning information and a presentation with occupational and physical therapy.
The therapist will provide information regarding your rehabilitation plan and expected outcome. The patient and family will be issued various written materials specific to their rehabilitation

Postoperative Rehabilitative Care
Postoperative rehabilitative care of your new total joint begins the day after surgery.
- Physical therapists will assess your mobility and work with nursing to progress your activity level and begin your exercise program.
- Occupational therapists will assess your functional ability to perform ADL's (activities of daily living) and issue any adaptive equipment as needed.
Outpatient Physical Therapy
Outpatient physical therapy offers continuation of rehabilitation of your new total joint with individualized exercise programs for increasing strength, mobility with the goal being utilization of your total joint to maximum function.
