Lymphedema
Management Program

The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department at University Hospital offers physical therapy services for the management of Lymphedema. The program provides comprehensive care and assistance in the management of this lifelong problem.

Individuals with a diagnosis of: primary or secondary congenital lymphedema, secondary lymphedema as the result of the removal of lymph nodes, radiation fibrosis and trauma may be suitable for this program.

The program may also be appropriate for individuals with:

  • edema secondary to any surgery
  • venous compromise
  • rheumatoid disease
  • arthritis
  • soft tissue swelling and obesity

Services include:

  • manual lymphatic drainage specialized bandaging
  • remedial exercises
  • compression garment recommendations
  • patient education for long term management and instructions in proper skin care

A physician’s referral is required for examination and treatment within this program.
