About the CNY Sports Concussion Center
When in doubt, sit them out...
That's the catch-phrase right now for good concussion management in sports.
A concussion is an invisible injury, and many athletes, coaches, or parents are unaware of various symptoms of concussion. Also, although concussion is another name for a mild traumatic brain injury, the effects of a concussion are not always so mild. Athletes who return to play too soon after concussion may be put at a higher risk for long-term, and even life-threatening, consequences.
The CNY Sports Concussion Center focuses on educating those involved with sports so that they can better recognize and manage sports-concussion. Comprehensive and state-of- the-art evaluation and treatment services are offered to those recovering from concussion, and to assist in return-to-play decisions.
When is it safe to return to sports after concussion?
If an athlete suffers another concussion while still recovering from a previous one, the risk of severe problems is greatly increased. Because of this, and because it is sometimes hard to recognize the symptoms of a concussion, the decision to return an athlete to play should only be made by a qualified professional. In general, athletes should not return to play after a concussion until they are completely symptom free for a specific period of time. The length of time depends on the athlete's history, the severity of the injury, and other factors.
