Information for Patients with UnitedHealthcare Insurance
(Updated 3/31/08)
The decision to terminate participation with United Healthcare was due to an outstanding balance of $1.5 million in unpaid claims owed to the Hospital. Further discussions of any future participation hinged on United's willingness to present a financial settlement against the substantial amount due University Hospital for services that had previously been provided to United Healthcare subscribers.
United Healthcare recently provided the Hospital with $1.0 million in escrow funds as a show of good faith to the Hospital against the $1.5 million owing. As promised, University Hospital resumed earnest discussions with United on a new contract in an effort to avoid any disruption in services to our customers.
University Hospital and United Healthcare announced March 28, 2008 that they have reached agreement on a new contract that will enable patients insured by United Healthcare and its AmeriChoice Medicaid, Child Health Plus and Family Health Plus health plans to continue to receive coverage for their care at University Hospital. The new one-year contract runs through April 28, 2009.
"We appreciate the hard work on everyone's part to bring this negotiation to a successful conclusion," said University Hospital Chief Executive Officer Phillip S. Schaengold, J.D. "We're especially pleased that this agreement does not disrupt coverage for patients who receive care at University Hospital."
"At the end of the day, University Hospital and UnitedHealthcare have a contract that is workable for both parties and continues to provide patients with a high-level of care," said UnitedHealthcare Network Vice President Alan Murray. "This agreement demonstrates our shared commitment to serving the Central New York community."
