Pediatric Inpatient Unit

5C is dedicated to the care of the Pediatric Oncology patients and their families. Services are provided for children aged 0 - 18 years, as well as older patients who are followed in the KNOT (Kids Now Off Therapy) Clinic. 5C serves a 17-county area of Upstate New York and Northern Pennsylvania. All services are provided on an outpatient basis.

A major goal of the staff of 5C is to provide a reassuring atmosphere for children receiving outpatient chemotherapy, blood transfusions, physical exams and other procedures such as lumbar puncture and bone marrow aspirations. Nurses help in the preparation of patients for diagnostic and follow-up radiological studies and in monitoring children receiving conscious sedation. Patient education and providing emotional support are also important responsibilities. Patients and their parents receive instruction on the disease process, medications, care of vascular access devices and any necessary modifications to their activities.
