Chaplaincy

A diagnosis of cancer brings out powerful emotions in patients and family members. Fear, anger, loss of control, and self-pity are among them. If there is not an outlet for these feelings they can be most destructive and have a detrimental effect on a person's physical and mental health.

One of the resources at University Hospital that people frequently turn to for comfort and guidance when trying to deal with a diagnosis of cancer, or with its often difficult treatment, is the Chaplaincy. Representing many religions, these caring individuals are sensitive to the impact of cancer on every aspect of the spiritual, family, and community lives of patients and their families.

Members of the Chaplaincy become a part of the comprehensive team of caregivers that includes physicians, nurses, therapists, social workers and others, helping to ensure the best possible outcome for patients and their families.

The Chaplaincy invite physicians, nurses, social service workers, and other health care professionals to call on them whenever their presence might be beneficial to the patient or to family or friends. This might be at the time a diagnosis is given, during treatment, or when the prognosis for recovery is not good.
