Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology

The Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology (CVIR) section of University Hospital performs approximately 3000 diagnostic and therapeutic interventional radiologic procedures annually.

Procedures include:

  • Diagnostic studies for the diagnosis of neoplasms including diagnostic arteriography and venography; and selective arterial and venous sampling.
  • Imaging guided percutaneous biopsies of almost every organ system.
  • Interventional therapeutic procedures such as hepatic chemoembolization
  • Placement and management of venous access lines (PICC lines and central lines for chemotherapy).

We have recently begun to aggressively manage inoperable hepatic neoplasms via transcatheter chemoembolization and percutaneous ablation with agents such as ethanol.

The faculty of the Section of cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology includes Paramjit (Romi) Chopra, MD, Kenneth D. Murphy, MD, Oun J. Kwon, MD, and Scott Buckingham, MD. Louise Manor, Nurse practitioner. The facilities are currently being upgraded to a new state-of-the-art Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology suite complete with PACS and Teleradiology along with a new state-of-the- art ultrasound machine and CT scan of image guided biopsies. A cardiovascular and Interventional radiology Clinic is also being developed. We have an active residency and fellowship program.
