Transplant Nursing and Support Staff
During a transplant patient's stay at University Hospital, another important part of the Transplant Program's Team is the skilled care provided on the Transplant Unit, 5B.
On a background of skilled medical-surgical nursing, our Transplant Unit is staffed by specially trained Transplant Unit Nurses. Skilled in special one-on-one nursing for the immediate post operative phase of the transplant patient, our skilled nursing staff enables the patients to return immediately post operatively to the Transplant Unit. This enables our kidney transplant recipients to avoid exposure to the milieu and expense of the intensive care unit.
Surgical house staff and Upstate Medical University rotating students participate in the care of the transplant patients. Bolstering the 24/7/365 coverage of the Transplant Surgeons, the Transplant Unit Team participates in maintenance of the Transplant Flow Sheets, implementation of the Care Maps, and the all important process of education for the transplant recipient.
