550 waiting roomThe Comprehensive Breast Care Center was started over twenty years ago by Dr. Patricia J. Numann. The Center was developed out of what Dr. Numann felt was a need for women in the community to have a dedicated comprehensive compassionate center to receive personalized breast and breast cancer care. Since its creation in 1986 the Center has seen more than 14,000 patients and 2,000 breast cancer patients.

With the retirement of Dr. Numann, University Hospital has renamed and dedicated her Comprehensive Breast Care Center. In an effort to more adequately reflect her accomplishments and legacy as a prominent endocrine surgeon as well as one of CNY's most well known breast surgeons, the center was recently re-named the Patricia J. Numann Breast and Endocrine Surgery Center in 2007.

The Numann Breast & Endocrine Surgery Center provides consultation for women and men with both benign and malignant breast conditions.

The Center also provides:

  • Second opinion consultations for abnormal findings or a new cancer diagnosis
  • High-risk screening
  • Genetic counseling services
  • Lactation consultation with CNY's only physician certified in lactation problems

University Hospital is also proud to offer CNY's first Multi-Disciplinary Breast Cancer Program.

Women (or men) with a known diagnosis of breast cancer can be seen at the Upstate Breast Cancer Program. At this Multi-specialty center patients can be seen by several breast cancer specialists who will be involved in their care such as surgeons, medical oncologists and radiation oncologists. Patients seen in this program will have an individual treatment plan recommended which represents the consensus of the entire multi-specialty team after careful review. In addition, recent biopsies are reviewed by our pathologists, assuring our team is in agreement with the diagnosis.

As part of the SUNY Upstate Medical University, the Patricia J. Numann Breast & Endocrine Surgery Center participates in educating and mentoring students, residents, and fellows learning about breast disease and breast cancer. Studies have actually revealed a superior level of care, with better outcomes, at teaching centers such as ours.

Every month our specialists hold a Breast Cancer Conference where difficult, complex or interesting cases are presented. All physicians and participants discuss and debate specific cases and come to a consensus about appropriated treatment. All members of the Breast Cancer Multi-Disciplinary Team are present for these sessions and include:

  • Surgeons who specialize in breast surgery including lumpectomy and mastectomy, lymph node sampling and lymph node dissection
  • Medical Oncologists who treat cancers with systemic medications
  • Radiation Oncologists who specialize in the duration and type of radiation treatments
  • Radiologists who are highly experienced in diagnostic breast testing and biopsy techniques
  • Pathologists who examine tissue specimens to determine a diagnosis of cancer or other diseases
  • Genetic Counselor for those patients with a strong family history of cancer or a possible genetic or hereditary link
  • Nurse Practitioners who work closely with all the physicians in coordinating your treatment plan, and provide additional medical care, education and support
  • Assistance in providing referrals to plastic surgeons for breast reconstruction surgery when needed
