Endocrine Surgery Program

The Endocrine Surgery Program at Upstate is designed to provide comprehensive and efficient treatment for our thyroid and parathyroid patients specific to their needs. Our multidisciplinary team includes endocrinologists, surgeons, radiologists and pathologists that work together to manage both benign and malignant thyroid disorders.

Our highly experienced team diagnoses and treats patients with thyroid and parathyroid disorders that include the following.

  • Goiter: abnormal enlargement of the thyroid usually caused by Graves disease in the US and lack of iodine in underdeveloped countries.
  • Hashimotos Disease: autoimmune disease where the body attacks the thyroid causing it to die and stop producing thyroid hormones which leads to hypothyroidism.
  • Hyperparathyroidism: overactive parathyroid, caused by one or more of the 4 parathyroid glands developing into an adenoma (non cancerous tumor), making too much parathyroid hormone and causing an increase in calcium levels which left untreated can lead to life threatening conditions.
  • Hyperthyroidism: overactive thyroid, more common in women than in men, symptoms may include increased heartbeat, weight loss, muscle weakness, disturbed sleep, heat intolerance and irritability.
  • Graves Disease: autoimmune disease where the body attacks the thyroid, most common cause of hyperthyroidism
  • Hypothyroidism: underactive thyroid, symptoms may include fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, dry skin, brittle nails and cold intolerance.
  • Sub acute thyroiditis: inflammation of thyroid gland due virus or immune system problem.
  • Thyroid Cancer: abnormal cell growth in the thyroid that is usually found due to an enlarged thyroid or nodules, is not very common and typically has a very high survival rate.
  • Thyroid Nodules: solid or fluid filled lumps within the thyroid, only a small percentage contain cancer, most do not cause symptoms and are only detected if they become large enough.
