University Hospital is the teaching facility for SUNY Upstate Medical University and is the core facility for our residency. It is licensed for 366 beds with an average occupancy of 302. This is a full service hospital that provides tertiary care to the Central New York region which encompasses more than 23 counties with a population of 1.5 million. All members of the medical staff are also faculty of the medical school.
The Department of Surgery and resident training facilities are housed within the structure of University Hospital.
Residents rotate through multiple clinical services in this hospital including:
Annually, there are almost 17,000 admissions, approximately 12,100 operative procedures and over 50,000 Emergency Department visits. All major residency educational activities are offered in the hospital or adjoining Weiskotten Hall.
All of the general hospitals in Syracuse are affiliated with the SUNY UMC Surgical Residency Training Program. Although the core of the program is based at University Hospital as well as the adjacent Veterans Administration Medical Center, resident teams also rotate through the general surgical teaching services of adjacent Crouse Hospital, nearby Community General Hospital, and St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center. In addition to these inpatient services, the ambulatory services at the State University Hospital provide ample out-patient experience.
