Upstate Medical university Alpha Omega Alpha, Gamma Chapter

Selection Process

Membership in AΩA is determined based on a number of criteria, including academic performance. The election process considers the qualities of "integrity, capacity for leadership, compassion, and fairness in dealing with one's colleagues." Membership at the NY state gamma chapter carries a commitment to service, including tutoring for underclassmen.

As per the national AΩA guidelines, up to 1/6 of the class may be elected to AΩA:

  • From the top 15% of the class, up to 1/12 may be elected during their junior (MS III) year.
  • From the top 25% of the class, another 1/12 may be elected during their senior (MS IV) year.

If selected as eligible for application to AΩA during the spring of junior year or the fall of senior year (based on class rank), students will be notified to submit an application consisting of:

  • USMLE Step 1 score
  • Medical school grades and course or clerkship narratives
  • Medical school honors and awards
  • Leadership, service, research and work experience while in medical school
  • A brief personal statement describing commitment to service if elected.

Applications are considered by the current members of AΩA in a blinded fashion.
