Flow Cytometry Core Facility

Flow cytometry is the usual method of choice for multi parameter analysis of individual cells. It is used for the quantification of functional properties of cells (such as: intracellular pH or apoptosis) or structural properties of cells (such as additionally: DNA content, cell surface or cytoplasmic proteins).

Current applications extend into the fields of Immunology, Hematology, Oncology, Reproductive Biology, Microbiology, Parasitology and Genetics.

The Flow Cytometry Core Facility currently has a Becton Dickinson FACSVantage S/E available at Upstate Medical University to take these measurements at rates of up to 25,000 cells per second. The flow cytometer can also be used to physically isolate a desired cell population under conditions that allow for subsequent cell culture. The Flow Cytometry Core Facility has a second instrument that will allow for high end cell analysis. A Becton Dickinson LSR II flow cytometer is also available for use and it offers three laser and eight color capabilities.

There is a per hour charge for services, but flow cytometry training sessions and consultation are provided without charge.
