Research Funding Available at Upstate

Upstate Medical University's Intramural Research Grant Program offers funding for faculty in four categories: Bridge Grants to enable PIs who have lost extramural support to continue their research for an interim period until extramural support is re-established; Equipment Grants for multi-user equipment needed to conduct research and attract additional research funding; Pilot Grants to assist faculty to explore new research topics and obtain preliminary data, refocus their research programs after a sabbatical, and establish basic/clinical science collaborations; and Postdoctoral Fellowships to attract postdocs to the Upstate campus. Annual deadlines for receipt of applications are 9/1 (all categories), and 4/1 and 12/1 (bridge and equipment grants and postdoc fellowships only).

Friend In Deed Research Grant Program Letters of Intent are being accepted through May 1, 2008, from Upstate faculty and staff research, with a preference for studies having a direct impact on human health.

Applications and guidelines are available on line at the Research Development web site.

NIH Director's Bridge Awards

The NIH is taking specific steps to provide continued but limited funding for new and established grantees whose R01 competing renewal grant applications for highly meritorious projects receive review scores near an institute/center nominal payline and who have limited additional support. Researchers who submit a competing renewal research project grant (R01) aplication or the first revision of the completing renewal application in 2007 (or submitted an application in 2006 that is still pending), who just miss the nominal funding payline for the IC to which they are primarily assigned, and have less than $200,000 in other support from all sources to support their research may be nominated by the administering NIH Institute for an NDBA. Nominations are submitted to the Office of the Director for final selection and funds of up to $500,000 will be providing using the R56 award mechanism. Applicants cannot apply or nominate themselves for an NDBA, but researcher who feel they qualify should contact their I/C program representative. See Notice-OD-07-056.

Responsible Conduct of Research Courses Available

The Collaborative IRB Training Initiative (CITI) now offers public access courses in the Responsible Conduct of Research. These courses were designed for, and are supported by, the Office of Research Integrity. Specific courses are available for researchers in the following areas:

Biomedical Sciences, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Physical Sciences and Engineering, and students and investigators in the Humanities.

These new courses can be found at:

Grants Portal to Facilitate NIH E-Submissions

Researchers planning to submit electronically to NIH in February now have a new campus resource to facilitate that submission. The Sponsored Programs Office Grants Management Portal enables researchers to "put" their developing and final grant applications into the portal for review or submission. SPO staff are automatically notifed of this action by the researcher, and can enter the portal at their end to review a developing application or submit the final version directly to Grants.gov on behalf of the researcher. Researchers are automatically notified of an SPO staff action, as well. At this time, the portal is only available on campus to Upstate faculty for an NIH e-submission. If the portal proves to be a valuable grants development/submission tool, its use will be expanded in the future.

Researchers can access the portal at E-Submissions.
