Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
As required by the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service Guidelines and New York State regulations, any investigator planning to use live vertebrate animals for research or education conducted at SUNY Upstate must secure prior approval of our Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
The IACUC evaluates the animal care and use program at SUNY Upstate Medical University and facilitates the conduct of meaningful scientific research that:
- avoids or minimizes discomfort, distress, pain in experimental animals consistent with sound scientific practices
- uses the minimum number of animals necessary to obtain valid results, and
- considers non-animal models wherever possible
IACUC membership includes: basic scientists, clinicians, students, veterinarians, and community members. The IACUC reports to the Vice President for Research.
