The Office of Environmental Health and Safety has been delegated by Upstate Medical University to provide all employees, patients, volunteers and visitors a safe and healthy environment.

In achieving this goal, Environmental Health and Safety plays an active role in providing education, regulatory compliance and the establishment of guidelines for environmental health and safety policies and procedures throughout Upstate Medical University.

EHS General Policy

To provide a safe and healthful work place for all persons who work, study, receive care, or visit the State University of New York Upstate Medical University and University Hospital.

  • It is the desire of Upstate Medical University to protect all individuals from unnecessary harm or injury as a result of a preventable accident. Upstate will undertake a program of education and enforcement in safety directed at faculty, staff and students.
  • The primary responsibility for development, implementation, and supervision of the Upstate Safety Program rests with the manager of Environmental Health and Safety. The manager has the authority to deal immediately and directly with any situation that may be hazardous or potentially hazardous to the environmental health or safety of Upstate Medical University and its people.
  • The manager will issue and maintain the "SUNY Upstate Medical University Environmental Health and Safety Manual" which shall be the primary formal medium for communicating information and safety requirements to Upstate. 4. Department heads and supervisors have the responsibility for ensuring compliance with all safety requirements.
  • The Office of Environmental Health and Safety will audit individual departments to ensure compliance with all safety requirements.
