Research Abstract
Video Assisted Wedge Resection (VAR) and Radiotherapy for High Risk T1 Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: A CALGB Phase II Study. With H. Shennib, H. Kreisman, L. Kohman, D. Sugarbaker, M. Green, J. Herndon
This national cooperative group study seeks to evaluate the role of local radiotherapy after thoracoscopic wedge resection in non-small cell carcinoma. Participating patients are required to have poor pulmonary function placing them at high risk for complications with a standard open thoracotomy approach. As a higher incidence of local recurrence is recognized to be an important cause of failure of limited resections through thoracotomy, and is likely to become more pronounced with the new technique of VAR, and, since locoregional recurrence constitutes at least 50% of the comorbid terminal events in patients who die from lung cancer following resection, it would appear pertinent to explore the role of radiotherapy as an adjuvant to wedge resection, particularly through VAR, of peripheral T1-NSCLC.
