The Division of Image Science and Informatics (ISI) was recently formed to have oversight over and address issues related to the technological shifts that have occurred in Radiology.

All radiographic exams (with the exception of mammography) are now acquired digitally and stored in the Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS). The shift to digital imaging technologies allows tremendous flexibility in manipulating image data, but also requires diligence to ensure the highest quality images are presented to the radiologist.

ISI faculty and staff are responsible for quality assurance testing of equipment in the department, as well as maintaining the connectivity of imaging equipment to the PACS system. Another component of ISI is the recently created Visualization Lab, where images acquired in CT, MRI, and Nuclear Medicine scanners are sent for post-processing to create three dimensional visualizations to assist Radiologists in their diagnoses.

The Visualization Lab also supports the visualization needs of other specialists, such as Neurosurgeons and the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at University Hospital.
