New York State University Police Officers, at SUNY Upstate, provide the highest degree of law enforcement and professionalism to the community in which they serve. New York State University Police Officers are statutorily bound to focus their crime prevention and quality of life efforts to SUNY Upstate, university owned/leased properties, and roadways which adjoin and/or abut the university campus.

The University Police Department at SUNY Upstate is entered into a written agreement, a Memorandum of Understanding, with the City of Syracuse Police Department in order to provide for the prompt investigation of violent felonies and missing persons reports.
Public Safety covers the following areas of the City of Syracuse
- 500, 900 and 1000 blocks of East Genesee Street
- 400 through the 700 blocks of Irving Avenue
- 200 through the 700 blocks of Harrison Street
- 700 block of Adams Street
- 500 block of Cedar Street
- 400 block of Madison Avenue
- 100 block of Elizabeth Blackwell Street
- University Health Care Center (90 Presidential Plaza)
- Madison Towers
- Parking Lot bordered by Furman Street, East Fayette, Wellington Place, and Irving Avenue
- Parking Lot bordered by Almond Street, East Fayette, South McBride, and East Washington Street
