2nd Year Curriculum (Medical School)—Evidence-Based Medicine
Course Goal
To enable you to search for, find, critically appraise and apply the best research evidence for the care of your patients.
Course Objectives
- Describe and apply the principles of evidence-based medicine and information mastery to the critical appraisal of all sources of medical information
- Identify and critically appraise a study about a therapy or screening program
- Identify and critically appraise a systematic review of a therapy or screening program
- Identify and critically appraise a study about a diagnostic test
- Describe the concepts of screening tests and screening programs and the biases possible in the evaluation of screening programs
- Describe additional preventive interventions: vaccinations, behavioral change counseling and chemoprophylaxis and provide examples
- Search for evidencein evidence-based medicine library resources
- Critically appraise information from: pharmaceutical representatives, guidelines
- Discuss some currently available frameworks for grading evidence and making evidence-based clinical recommendations
- Describe the decision-making and information-seeking patterns of physicians
