First-year medical student Ariba Chowdhury lights a candle for hope at the February 27 Student National Medical Association (SNMA) Dinner, the closing event of the Black History month celebration at SUNY Upstate Medical University. All events were held in memory of Eunique Darby and Edward Swain, two patients of our Waters Center for Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders. Last spring, Upstate medical students and staff hosted marrow donor drives in support of the teens and have registered 175 students and staff for the national marrow donor registry. Sadly, Darby and Swain died in November at a Rochester hospital from complications from bone marrow transplants.
