Residency "Tracks"

The residency in Syracuse is structured so that all residents are encouraged to add an area of emphasis or specialty in a particularly appealing aspect within Psychiatry, while still allowing completion of training within the standard four years. We take full advantage of local institutions and community resources and expect that the richness of the opportunities will stimulate interests in areas such as these:

  1. Leadership Track: combines a Masters in Public Administration (MPA) at the consistently #1 ranked (by US News and World Report) administration school in the nation, the Maxwell School of Public Administration at Syracuse University External link with the 4 year residency in Psychiatry. Designed to excite and develop the next generation of academic and public policy leaders in Psychiatry. Residents must separately apply and win admission to the MPA course at Maxwell: Drs. Mantosh Dewan, John Manring.
  2. Research Track: designed to develop a research career, with participants completing a grant- funded project by the time they graduate. Residents work with recognized leaders in their field: Drs. Steven Batki [substance abuse; schizophrenia and comorbid conditions; integrated psychiatric care in primary care settings], Stephen Faraone [genetics, ADHD], Wendy Kates [neuro-imaging, Velo-cardio-facial syndrome], Usha Satish [simulations to assess patterns of higher level thinking and prolem-solving applied to leadership, clinical syndromes and residency training], Paula Trief [behavioral health psychology; diabetes], Michael Gordon [ADHD], Thomas Schwartz [psychopharmacology; Vagal Nerve Stimulation], Ronald Saletsky [psychological interventions in children with diabetes] Robert Gregory [Dynamic Deconstructive Therapy for alcoholic patients with borderline personality disorder], Jud Staller [long-term effects of antipsychotic medication on children, treatment of OCD] to name a few.
  3. Psychotherapy Track: The Syracuse Center for Psychotherapy, situated in the Department of Psychiatry provides access to expertise in an extensive array of psychotherapy approaches within the two broad traditions of psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral psychotherapies. 4. Child Psychiatry Track: allows working in a clinical area [Drs. Wanda Fremont, Jud Staller, Cindy Carter, Arun Kunwar], a focus on families [Dr .David Keith] or on research [Drs. Stephen Faraone, Wendy Kates, Michael Gordon, Ronald Saletsky, Usha Satish] or some combination of these, without requiring the full 5 or 6 year Child and Adolescent Residency.
  5. Family Psychiatry Track: allows more experience in family evaluation, family functioning and intervention without requiring the extra years of Child Psychiatry training: Dr. David Keith.
  6. Biological Psychiatry/ Psychopharmacology Track: provides opportunities to explore more advanced aspects of somatic treatments including Vagal Nerve Stimulation, repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, as well as more sophisticated involvement in psychopharmacology treatment, consultation and teaching and a deeper familiarity with neurobiology: Drs.
