Clinical Training Program

First Year

  • Total of eight months (80% time) working on the child and adolescent inpatient units at Four Winds Hospital, Syracuse, and Hutchings Psychiatric Center.
  • Four months of the 1st year of training include rotations at Kasson Road School (school consultations -20% time), Hillbrook Detention Center (forensic consultation - 20% time).
  • Twenty percent of the first year throughout the twelve months of training is allotted to didactic lectures, outpatient treatment, supervision, journal club, and grand rounds. Didactic seminars in the first year include an orientation series, seminars in child psychotherapy, child & adolescent development, and child & adolescent psychopharmacology.

Second Year

The emphasis of the second year of training is on outpatient treatment.

  • Residents will spend 40% of their time seeing children and families in the Child & Adolescent Outpatient Clinical the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and University Hospital
  • Additional rotations during the 2nd year include:
    • Cedar Street Day Treatment Center (10%)
    • Consultation/Liaison Service at University Hospital (10%)
    • Pediatric Neurology at University Hospital (10%)
    • Margaret Williams Developmental Evaluation Center (10%)
    • elective of choice (20%)
  • Didactics offered during the second year include:
    • seminars in advanced psychotherapy
    • family therapy
    • research methods for child psychiatry
    • legal and ethical issues in child psychiatry
    • administrative psychiatry, outpatient diagnostic care conference
    • psychological testing of children
    • school consultation
    • religion and psychiatry
    • American culture and psychiatry
Both first and second year fellows participate in Child Rounds, Department of Psychiatry Grand Rounds, and Journal Club.
