The Child Abuse Project/ECC Consultation Team offers trainees both a monthly seminar as well as a comprehensive and well-supervised experience in providing both consultation and evaluative experiences to an outside treatment agency.
The monthly didactic seminar covers a wide range of topics related to child abuse, including: the NYS mandated course in child abuse and neglect reporting , normal versus abnormal child development, sexually reactive children, treatment of sexually abused children, legal issues, etc.
The trainees, working along with Dr. Wendy Evers Gordon, provide weekly consultation to staff at the Elmcrest Children's Center (ECC) a residential treatment facility in Syracuse, New York. Elmcrest staff present a case about which they have specific diagnostic, clinical and/or treatment questions. We thoroughly review the background materials, discuss possible diagnostic hypotheses and treatment options, then conduct a clinical interview with the child (and family when possible), ultimately providing a written consultation report to ECC. Students on this rotation develop skills in time-limited interviewing, case conceptualization and consultation to an outside agency.
