Grading Policy

I couldn't have found a program with better direction than the one that I have found here at Upstate Medical University!

Please note that there are 2 unit examinations (unit 6 and 7). These two examinations will be followed by a comprehensive final examination that will be a subject examination from the National Board of Medical Examiners.

How are the grades calculated?

10 % of your grade will be given for Unit 6; 10% of your grade will be given for Unit 7; and 80% of your grade will be given for the final comprehensive National Board of Medical Examiner's examination.

75% and over - Pass

85% to 93% - High Pass

93% and over - Honors

How can I prepare for the exams?

We have noted, in the past few years, a high correlation between attendance at the classes and grades. Some lecturers recommend journal articles or textbook chapter(s) to supplement your attendance at lectures.

Although we do not make available previous exams, there are several books available at the bookstore or in the library which may be helpful in preparing for the examination.

Absence/Retake Policy:

The three exams are mandatory. In serious emergencies and exceptional circumstances, arrangements for retaking the examination may be approved by the course director.

Is there anything else I should be aware of?

Yes. Do not forget to read about topics that are covered in other courses. Mental Status Examination, for one. This topic was adequately covered in your ICM course, so we will not repeat it here. Also, much of what you learned in the Neurosciences course will be relevant to Behavioral Science. There is, in short, considerable overlap in the subjects covered during the basic science years.

Tell me something about how our knowledge is tested?

Remember, this is a preclinical basic science course. Basic science knowledge is essential to the practice of medicine. Thus, many (if not all) of the questions will pose a clinical problem and ask you to solve the problem by using your basic behavioral science knowledge.
