  • Budget Hearing
    Speaking at a public hearing on the 2008-2009 New York state budget, SUNY Upstate Medical University President David R. Smith, M.D., said the university is poised for "responsive growth to meet the needs of our region" by investing in education, research and patient care and extensive outreach efforts. He noted that numerous initiatives under way plan to address the serious health professional shortages that threaten access to healthcare in many rural communities.

  • Lessons Learned from Sputnik
    In his commentary published in the Post-Standard, SUNY Upstate Medical University President David R. Smith, M.D., uses the 50th anniversary of the Sputnik launch (Oct. 4, 1957) to call for renewed commitment to investing in science and education on the part of government, industry and education. Smith notes that with half of the fastest-growing careers in New York requiring a familiarity in science, the time is right to reinvest in science education to meet demands of competitive labor market and launch the best in human potential.
