Senator Schumer Proposes Legislation
U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer chose SUNY Upstate Medical University as the backdrop April 23 to announce his support for increased funding of a federal program designed to recruit doctors to underserved areas. The legislation would double funding for the National Health Service Corps.
SUNY Upstate President David R. Smith, M.D., noted that he participated in the program in Brownsville, Texas, when he finished medical school. The program, Smith said, changed his career dramatically.
