Academic Health Center Leaders Meet in Buffalo
Upstate Medical University President David R. Smith, M.D., speaks June 2 at a gathering of presidents and administrators from the state's four academic health centers to discuss mutual issues. Among those attending were David Dunn, M.D., vice president for health affairs at the University at Buffalo, John LaRosa, M.D., president of Downstate Medical Center, David R. Smith, M.D., president of Upstate Medical University, and Samuel Stanley Jr., M.D., incoming president of the SUNY Stony Brook.
Pharmaceutical Industry's Economic Impact on CNY
Upstate Medical University President David R. Smith, M.D., speaks at a news conference May 15 highlighting the pharmaceutical industry's economic impact on Central New York. Smith noted that support from the industry aids in Upstate's research mission by funding clinical trials into new treatments for a range of diseases, from ALS to multiple sclerosis.

SUNY Trustee Chair Carl Hayden Visits SUNY Upstate
SUNY Board of Trustees Chair Carl Hayden is welcomed to campus by SUNY Upstate Medical University President David R. Smith, M.D., and SUNY Upstate Council member David Northrup. Hayden was recently in town to speak to the University Hill Corp., and visited campus, toured University Hospital and met with administrators, faculty, staff and students.

Smith, M.D., received a plaque in his honor from the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC), where he served as president from 1996 to 2001 prior to his appointment as chancellor of Texas Tech University (TTU).
