President's Awards

The President of SUNY Upstate Medical University acknowledges
outstanding employees at two events in the Spring and Fall.


Employee Recognition Awards Given in Spring 2009

The President’s Employee Recognition Awards will be awarded to the recipients on Thursday May 21, 2009 in the Institute of Human Performance.

These Awards Honor:

  • Employees of University Hospital
  • Employees of the Colleges (Non-faculty)
  • Employees of Shared Service Departments

Award Categories for the Campus
and University Hospital include:
  • Outstanding Contribution of the Year: Given to either an employee or team that made an outstanding contribution to a successful project or initiative that addressed a significant need and/or positively impacted Upstate and /or the communities we serve.
  • Community Service of the Year: Recognizing an employee OR Department who has gone above and beyond bringing the values of SUNY Upstate Medical University to individuals or organizations in the Central New York Community.
  • Team of the Year: Recognizing a group of employees who have demonstrated sustained outstanding achievements working together as a team. (For the purpose of this award, a team is two or more employees formed to complete a defined project or initiative.
  • Leader of the Year: Recognizing an outstanding supervisor, manager, foreman, or director who has demonstrated exemplary day-to-day problem-solving and leadership skills and who encourages team building, collegiality and productivity.
  • Employee of the Year: Recognizing an employee who has gone above and beyond his/her job responsibilities by exhibiting a strong work ethic, creative problem solving, and sustained excellence in executing his/her job

Faculty Awards Given in Fall 2009

The 2009 Presidents Awards will be awarded to the recipients at the Fall Faculty Convocation on Wednesday, September 16, 2009 in the Medical Alumni Auditorium.

Advancement of Affirmative Action

This award recognizes any member of the Upstate Medical University faculty and staff who has contributed to the attainment of institutional affirmative action goals, promoted diversity throughout Upstate Medical University, developed innovative approaches and programs to retain members of underrepresented groups and helped to maintain a multicultural environment.

Excellence in Library Science*

This award recognizes outstanding librarians with consideration given to sound scholarship and continuing professional growth demonstrated through publications, membership in professional organizations and service to Upstate Medical University.

Excellence in Professional Service*

This award recognizes an individual who has made outstanding professional contributions by repeatedly seeking personal improvement in service to the campus and ultimately State University and, in doing so, has transcended the normal definitions of excellence.

Excellence in Faculty Service*

This award recognizes outstanding contributions made by faculty of Upstate Medical University who have repeatedly sought improvement of themselves, their campus and ultimately the State University and, in so doing, have transcended the normal definitions of excellence.

Excellence and Leadership in Research*

This award recognizes outstanding investigators who have risen to a position of prominence in their field. The primary criteria are excellence and leadership in research over an extended portion of an investigative career at Upstate Medical University.

Excellence in Basic Research by a Young Investigator*

This award recognizes and rewards young investigators who have had exceptional success in initiating their research careers. The primary criteria are establishing substantial extramural funding and publishing high-impact papers in peer-reviewed journals.

Excellence in Clinical Research by a Young Investigator*

This award recognizes and rewards young medically-prepared investigators who have had exceptional success in initiating their research careers while meeting their responsibilities as clinicians. The primary criteria are establishing substantial extramural funding and publishing high-impact papers in peer-reviewed journals.

Excellence in Teaching*

This award recognizes outstanding faculty members who have excelled in teaching techniques and representative materials, scholarship and professional growth, student services, academic standards and evaluation of requirements, and student performance representing the following colleges:

  • College of Medicine Basic Sciences Departments/College of Graduate Studies
  • College of Medicine Clinical Departments – Syracuse
  • College of Medicine Binghamton Clinical Campus
  • College of Health Professions
  • College of Nursing

Outstanding Voluntary Faculty

This award recognizes outstanding voluntary faculty based on teaching techniques and representative materials, scholarship and professional growth, student services, academic standards, student/resident instruction, and length of service to the Upstate Medical University representing the following colleges:

  • College of Medicine Basic Science Departments/College of Graduate Studies
  • College of Medicine Clinical Departments – Syracuse
  • College of Medicine Binghamton Clinical Campus
  • College of Health Professions
  • College of Nursing

President’s Awards are recognized by a medallion and/or a framed certificate and are presented annually at the Fall Faculty Convocation.

NOTE: * President's Award may be a precursor to a Chancellor’s Award in this category. Only full-time employees can be considered for the Chancellor’s Awards.
