Why SUNY Upstate?

We're in the Community

The MISSION

of the Department of Radiation Oncology—

to offer the best, most proficient care to our patients by providing the most advanced technologies and therapies available and by participating in and staying on top of the latest in cancer research.
Radiation Therapy in Central New York began in the 1950’s at Good Samaritan and Memorial Hospitals (now Crouse Irving Memorial Hospital). In 1965 the department moved into its new home at University Hospital where it has served the Central New York area ever since.

In 1968, Dr. Robert Sagerman began the ACGME Accredited Residency Program that continues to train residents to this day. In their continuing effort to provide state of art Radiation Oncology to more cancer patients the physicians of Upstate Medical University opened Hill Radiation Oncology in 1994 and spread this commitment to the Southern Tier of New York and Oswego County with the opening of UHS Radiation Oncology in 1997 and Oswego County Radiation Oncology in 1999.

Over the years University Hospital has been able to stay in step with the changes in technology in Radiation Therapy from the installation of the areas first Linear Accelerators to its latest effort which brings the latest Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy technology to the community of Central New York.

The Department of Radiation Oncology offers the Central New York community excellence in patient care, teaching, and research.
