The hospitals affiliated with the SUNY Upstate Medical University's training program have a total inpatient bed capacity of 1,900 with 47,000 admissions per year.

The 358-bed University Hospital, completed in 1965, is the focus for regional referral of complicated surgical and medical problems as well as the Level I referral center for trauma.

The Comprehensive Care Center provides new intensive care units, 12 new operating rooms, and an expanded emergency room.

Funding for a Children's Hospital and operating rooms has recently been secured with construction to begin in the upcoming years.

Crouse Hospital and the Veterans Administration Hospital are physically adjacent to University Hospital.
These facilities, along with SUNY Upstate Medical University's basic science buildings (Weiskotten Hall and the Institute for Human Performance), two residential dormitories and the Campus Activities Building form the nucleus of the medical complex. Another local hospital, St. Joseph's, also participates actively in the educational program.
Formerly affiliated with Syracuse University, the SUNY Upstate Medical University became a part of the State University of New York system in 1950. It serves patients living in the fifteen-county Central New York Region as well as those in metropolitan Syracuse. Approximately 1,000 students are registered each year in the College of Medicine and the College of Health Professions, and Upstate employs more than 800 full and part-time faculty members, aided by 1,400 individuals serving as voluntary faculty.
