Lawrence S. Chin, MD, FACS

The Department of Neurosurgery at Upstate Medical University is pleased to announce the appointment of Lawrence S. Chin, MD, FACS as the Robert B. and Molly G. King Professor and Chair of Neurosurgery.
Having performed over 4500 operations and radiosurgery procedures, Dr. Chin’s clinical and research accomplishments reflect his expertise in surgery for brain tumors, skull base tumors, Gamma Knife radiosurgery, trigeminal neuralgia and minimally invasive spine procedures. Prior to his arrival in Syracuse, Dr. Chin was Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) and Neurosurgeon-in-Chief at Boston Medical Center (2006-2011). He was also named Assistant Dean for Diversity and Multi-Cultural Affairs at BUSM. Previously, he served as Professor of Neurosurgery and Radiation Oncology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and was Medical Director of the University of Maryland Gamma Knife Center and Maryland Brain Tumor Center (1996-2006). He is a diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
A summa cum laude graduate of the University of Michigan (1983), Dr. Chin received his MD with honors from the University of Michigan (1987), where he was a member of the honor societies Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed his neurosurgical training at the University of Southern California and Los Angeles County Hospital (1994).
Dr. Chin is a recipient of numerous honors, awards, and visiting professorships, including the Maryland Shock Trauma Hero Award and the Young Clinician Investigator Award from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS). He has held a range of leadership positions in the AANS, including Executive Council member of the Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation and Chair of the Young Neurosurgeons Committee. He is a long-standing member of several NIH Study Sections and served as Chair of the Clinical Neurophysiology and Devices Study Section (2008-2009). He has been on the Scientific Advisory Board for several medical device companies.
Dr. Chin has published over 100 articles and book chapters in a wide variety of peer-reviewed journals, and he co-edited the definitive stereotactic radiosurgery textbook, “Principles and Practice of Stereotactic Radiosurgery.” Currently, he serves as a reviewer for Journal of Neurosurgery, Neurosurgery, Neurosurgical Focus, Journal of Neuro-Oncology, World Neurosurgery, Endocrine Practice, and Practical Reviews in Neurosurgery, and he is on the editorial board of the online medical journal PeerEmed. Among his most recent publications include his series of patients with pituitary tumors treated using a flexible carbon dioxide laser through an endoscope and a new minimally invasive surgical approach for patients with spinal stenosis and disc herniation.
