Hand Rehabilitation Program

The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department at University Hospital offers a program specializing in the rehabilitation of arm and hand injuries. It provides a comprehensive therapy assessment and individualized treatment for the arm and hand.

This program specializes in disorders that result in limitations of the upper extremity that affect a person's ability to complete activities of daily living (ADL). These disorders may include: pain, weakness/loss of muscle strength, loss of range of motion (ROM) and sensory loss.

  • Fractures of the upper extremity/hand
  • Soft tissue trauma
  • Nerve injuries
  • Tendon injuries
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Burns
  • Tendonitis
  • Crush injuries
  • Arthritic conditions

What Should You Expect From Your Visit?

Treatments may include:

  • Therapeutic exercises (strengthening and range of motion)
  • Functional activities for ADL
  • Static and dynamic splinting
  • Application of heat and cold
  • Home exercise programs
  • Sensory re-education
  • Joint protection education
  • Use of adaptive strategies/adaptive devices
A physician's referral is required for examination and treatment within this program.
