Overview

Dr. Weber and patient. The Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Residency Program at Upstate Medical University is a 3-year advanced program (PGY2-PGY4) of progressive education and responsibility.

The program currently accepts 4 residents each year for a total complement of 12.

We are committed to the continual development of a model system of resident education.

Our training program employs multiple teaching modalities including:
  • self directed learning
  • didactic instruction
  • programmed learning
  • directed self study
Our training program employs strategies to provoke learning such as:
  • journal club
  • case and lecture presentations by residents, resident research and student/staff teaching assignments.

Resident Experiences

During the course of our residency program, each resident performs:
  • over 200 EMGs
  • over 300 bed admissions
  • over 1,000 consults

Faculty

Our 10 full-time faculty serve as role models, coordinators, guides and mentors. Each resident is assigned a faculty mentor, who develops/reviews/approves education and research plans, supervises the resident's portfolio development and assists with career development needs. We have faculty active on national boards, national disability-related organizations, the Institute of Medicine, National Institute of Health, and the Center for Disease Control. Yet faculty members remain actively involved in the care of patients. We believe that this direct involvement enhances the learning environment for residents.

Our program offers a range of clinical experience based on faculty practice. The faculty have interests which collectively span the scope of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. We are particularly strong in Pediatric Rehabilitation and Electodiagnosis.
